hearts, history, hunger

This year for Black History Month I thought I’d share the stories Thurgood Marshall and Hazel Scott.

Justice Thurgood Marshall…

never stopped having empathy for the common folk and the disadvantaged” and he used the law to help those folk…. Regardless of color. He proved a tremendous force for good and is someone that everyone should know about. Here is a short 8 minute clip…. you won’t be disappointed.

Hazel Scott

was a Trinidadian-born jazz and classical pianist, singer and actor. She was also an activist. Here is her story….

Here are some of my songs of romance…..

Love is our true destiny. We do not find the meaning of life by ourselves alone –  we find it with one another.

My staff here at gregoryabbott.com  thought they’d have a bit of fun and came up with this Valentine’s Day t-shirt. lol

A SUSTAINABLE FUTURE FOR ALL

I wrote recently about my long term interest in learning about and understanding how to address … as a planet… a sustainable future for all. There are seventeen United Nations Sustainable Development Goals  that were adopted in 2015 by countries all over the world. I spoke about the first… which is to end poverty in all its forms everywhere.

The SECOND is to end HUNGER

World hunger is caused by so much more than a shortage of food. Even in places where food is plentiful or can be grown, challenges like disasters, conflict or poverty prevent people from accessing it. Imagine…. if one of us was living in a country that made the basic necessity of food a challenge….People in poverty generally spend between 60 and 80 percent of their income on food, which can force them to prioritize feeding their families over meeting other basic needs or reaching long-term goals, like sending their children to school. If an emergency strikes, they may need to skip meals in order to cope financially — and the cycle of hunger continues.

Despite decades of progress in reducing world hunger, 2017 saw increases in the number of people who are hungry. More than 820 million people still go to bed hungry every night — that’s one in every nine people who don’t have the food they need to live a healthy, productive life.

What can WE do?
Well…. here are a few ideas people are coming up with…. Non profits are doing most of the work and there is no one way to do this. It takes a group effort on the part of all of us. The main thing is to be aware that this is happening….

P. S. My prayers for an effective end to the threat of the coronavirus.

A World Health Organization committee is set to meet for the second time in a week to decide whether the outbreak is a global health emergency. Today’s meeting comes as the number of confirmed cases surpassed 7,700 worldwide, most of them in China

UPDATE: The virus has now been declared a global health emergency.

…..stop… look… vote

Hi everyone

I’ll be releasing a new single entitled “Stop Look Listen”. Look out for it to drop in the next week or so. It’s a song that has always resonated for me. It was made famous by the Stylistics whom I had the pleasure of recently performing with in Memphis. A great bunch of guys.

I am working hard in the studio these days. I’ve always loved the studio and have always cherished it as a place where (for me) everything makes sense. I find social media and the news hard to digest and understand these days, and I think we all occasionally need a break from the madness. I hope some romantic music will make you feel as good as it makes me feel when I’m creating it..

I picked “Stop, Look, Listen (to your heart)” to record because it is a song that I find particularly pertinent today. I believe that its increasingly important for each of us to look in the mirror and search long and hard about our beliefs and update them if needed…… and change them…… if somewhere along the line they got headed in the wrong direction. We all have that power.

When we look in that mirror, I believe we should have an eye towards what’s good for ALL PEOPLE. Not just ourselves, or the group we are associated with. At the end of the day, we are all in this together. Its not an easy task but one that worthy of our attempt.

On another note I’d like to urge my fans and friends to please vote in these mid terms elections and all elections from here on out. We need you. Even if you have never voted before, please register and vote now. You may not believe in the system… you may not like the options available…. believe me I completely understand. But if we do nothing and wait for the perfect option, the perfect answer, we give up our chance to have our say and head things in the direction we feel is right. Every vote is going to count from here on out. So please, I urge you to use your voice.

Remember the things that mean the most to you and vote your conscience.

I don’t know about you, but I see so many people struggling these days… Times are difficult for everyone but I still believe in Miracles. Here’s a song I wrote entitled “Miracles”. Its message is “BE THE CHANGE”

And (as I always try and end with love) here is my song “Without You”. After all is said and done, love is the most powerful tool we have at our disposal.

Some quotes for this post:

“Real integrity is doing the right thing, knowing that nobody’s going to know whether you did it or not”. OPRAH WHINFREY

“Self-preservation shouldn’t be the first instinct in politics. It should be doing the right thing for the country. SETH MOULTON

Human greatness does not lie in wealth or power, but in character and goodness. People are just people, and all people have faults and shortcomings, but all of us are born with a basic goodness. ANNE FRANK
