walking in memphis……

Before too much time passed I thought I would share a little about my trip to Memphis. Here are some interesting facts if you’d like to know even more. I’d like to thank Imad Handi who carried on with the show and did as David Gest would have liked. I would also like to thank Oona Mitchell of Royal Studios and her son Daniel for all their help. (This is where Bruno Mars “Uptown Funk” was produced by the way). Feel free to click the many links in this post for a more thorough appreciation of Memphis, Tennessee.

It was great fun to work with so many of the artists I grew up listening to. Backstage we were singing every word!

I got in from my flight rather late; about 10PM where I was taken to the world famous Peabody Hotel. A small problem though…. they had booked my room 🙁  I thought I would have nowhere to stay. The evening Manager (Dewayne Shipp) had something up his sleeve however. This can happen from time to time; and after sincerely apologizing they sent us to The  Pyramid’s Big Cypress Lodge for one night to be brought back to the Peabody in the morning. I was puzzled that he was chuckling a bit as he sent us on our way. (Of course I understand things now). This place was like an amusement park for outdoor enthusiasts and I never would have learned about it if the mix up hadn’t happened.

bcl pyramid

The Pyramid is the former home of the Memphis Grizzlies and is now the Bass Pro Shop headquarters. It turned out to be quite a lot of fun. There are lagoons and bridges and boats and fish and alligator’s all INSIDE the pyramid, alongside sports equipment and all the miscellaneous sales items. The Lodge is above looking down on this.

There is an elevator that goes to the top of the pyramid where you can see a lovely view of the Mississippi River and the city. (Note: It’s the tallest free standing elevator in the country).

Going down anyone?… (watch out for the alligators)

The next day was back to the Grand Peabody (where I was graciously upgraded to the Celebrity Suite), rehearsals, and on to the show with a quick trip down Beale Street.

The Peabody Hotel is known for its red carpet treatment of the ducks that live on the roof and play in the lobby every day. Kind of silly but kind of neat. Its the ritual of the thing that is amusing.

You can’t go the Memphis and not go to Beale Street which was only a block away from the hotel. Here are a few pics.

Women’s History Month

There are so many incredible women to celebrate in March since it is Women’s History Month but I’ve chosen Lena Horne to bring to your attention this year. Her success, but more meaningfully her battle against the stereotypes and prejudices of her day seemed important to me in this election year. Take a moment if you will to read about her. Here’s a link.

I will be doing a show on May 6th for the Memphis in May Festival.Canada-Flag-5

I’ll also be heading to the United Kingdom in the summer…. some time around August.

We’ll keep you informed as time progresses. Hope you had a happy St. Patrick’s Day.

Stay well and welcome to SPRING!

……summer highs

Hey all. Just checking in to see how your summer is going. I just read an article that says 2015 is a record warm weather year. I guess this means that the weather is going to get pretty crazy over the next little while……

I will be in the August 15th issue of Entrigue Magazine so please keep a lookout for it.

On an amusing note “Shake You Down” was recently featured on the hit Canadian TV comedy series “Mr. D”.  Mr. D is an awkward, but lovable teacher in the show. In one scene he’s trying to “get the girl”. When “SYD” comes on the jukebox he uses it to serenade her…. but unfortunately it doesn’t work. (and here I was thinking all this time that “SYD” was a slam dunk!!  SMH ? ).

The “David Gest “Time of My Life” United Kingdom tour is coming up in September. I’m looking forward to working with some of the other acts on the show, and meeting some of my UK fans and friends.

You can check my “What’s New”  link for the  dates in the cities near you. PLEASE NOTE: I am only able to do the first week of what has now become a two week tour. So, if you’d like to see me, please keep that in mind. Thanks.

I was sitting on the dock at my marina the other day watching the sun set as sailboats peacefully drifted by. It reminded me of a wonderful article I read about the importance of beauty which I thought I’d share with you. Not personal beauty, but the beauty of what surrounds us.

If you haven’t heard my new single; Bob Marley’s “Stir It Up” or picked up a copy yet, Here’s a link.

Please like, share, buy and tell your friends. We’re trying to get this one some radio airplay so every little bit helps! Thank you.

Rest in Peace Bobbi Kristina Brown

That’s it for now.Talk to you soon.

Here’s my quote for this post:

You can search throughout the entire universe for someone who is more deserving of your love and affection than you are yourself, and that person is not to be found anywhere. You yourself, as much as anybody in the entire universe deserve your love and affection.
